Furnas Valley's House

São Miguel Island, 2014 - 2016

A degraded house was the starting point for the design of a holiday home in the center of Furnas.

The house retains the same volume that faces the street, with changes only in the volume behind contacting a zone of green space. Moulded inside basalt stone walls, the inner solution is developed in traditional constructive solutions of wood, either in intermediate floors and the roof, keeping the original structural solution.

Existing windows have been restated in order to increase the brightness to the spaces, and order the main facade.

We chose to open new windows in the gable side where a small building was demolished, offering possibilities for more diverse and complex experiences than the previous type. Is also maintained the existing furnace masonry and respective chimney reused for new experiences which is a reference element.
