Environmental Interpretation Centre Fajã da Caldeira Santo Cristo

São Jorge Island, 2007 - 2011

The Environmental Interpretation Centre oversees and advocates for the entire area. In the future, it will also encompass a campsite situated in Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo. Thus, the centre is the first contact regarding the intention to disclose information “in loco" becoming an essential function, explaining the environmental values in relation to this prominent site, particularly:

  • The streamline and enrichment of excursions to Faja de Santo Cristo;
  • The awakening of environmental education associated with the interpretation of the landscape and countryside values;
  • The creation of interpretive natural and architectural heritage routes;
  • Knowledge development of marine and coastal habitats including the fauna and flora diversity;

There are two buildings that were built simultaneously: The Environmental Interpretation Centre and an apartment to support research, which were reconstructed according to the original deployment matrix. The surrounding stone walls were kept and redefined along with existing sources of drinking water.

Building 1, the Environmental Interpretation and Monitoring Centre, consists of two floors, combining both "modern" and traditional decor. With a formation of a "T" (a predominant pattern of traditional houses in Faja), the main body revives the features and design of the original facade, keeping the sash windows and doors of short stature, as well as materials, whether it be the frames of wood or the doorposts and lintels in basalt stone of the region. The perpendicular body formerly destined to be a kitchen, which keeps with the facade showcasing the natural stone chimney, introducing, however, some contemporary elements in order to connect with the forthcoming campsite.

Building 2 is a temporary apartment, it appears on the matrix as a former shed, adapted and modernized according to the new functions in which it is intended. It also consists of two floors, functioning almost as an open-space: on level 0 the kitchen and living room is located and on the 1st floor is the bathroom and bedroom.
