The 1988 Azores Fair intended to show the archipel production activities of all kind. There was already a precinct for an agricultural fair that should be adapted and improved.
The island landscape is crossed by long and dark stone walls of basalt stone, here and there marked by neoclassic porticos announcing XIXth century estates. These were the references for the new enclosure and entry in the exhibition: a high stone wall suspended by a white painted concrete portico. The portico's finishing and tense geometry opposes the colour and organic texture of the basalt stone.
Once inside, a parade of flagpoles draws an axis of access leading to the stairs after which the exhibition begins.
